Perhaps you have heard about Acorn stair lifts. They are one of the many popular brands of stairway lifts today. However, if you are a wise buyer or consumer, you know that brand names are not the only factors to consider when shopping for mobility products for your senior especially the stair chair lifts. If you have no idea what a chair lift is and how it works, you can think about those rail transport systems like the train.

When are stair lifts needed? These chair lifts or stair lifts are needed when your residence has two or more floors and you have either an old person on board or a disabled member of your family, perhaps someone who's suffering from a leg injury or someone who's currently recovering from a knee surgery for instance. A chair lift is a single chair attached to a particular track, which is fixed onto the stair treads. The chair will follow the track up and down and this will serve as the user's vehicle in climbing up or going down the stairs.

Two known benefits of chair lifts It's pretty much obvious from their main function that stair lifts provide easy mobility and it's not just mobility in terms of going from place to place on the ground. It's mobility in terms of climbing up and down the stairs. That's a lot more difficult as well as dangerous. Unless there's a wheelchair lift or an elevator built into your home, you may not need these stairway lifts anymore.

Based on the definitions and functions explained earlier and other details, it's not that hard to realize two obvious advantages of having a chair lift in your home. One is that it provides chances for mobility to those people who are unable to move that much without pains and troubles here and there. The second benefit is a bit of independence on the part of the user or senior and that's equivalent to less worries from the rest of the family.

Before you go shopping for these chair lifts, take a good look first at your stairs. You need to know the current condition of your stairs. Is it strong enough to support the weight of the chair lift plus the weight of the user? Is it wide enough to allow installation and use of a chair lift? If the answer to those questions is no, you will be having a lot of work to do. This is the perfect situation to ask yourself if it's more practical and more convenient to install a home elevator than to renovate the stairs so that it's possible to set up stair lifts.

After taking into account those important details regarding your own stairs, you need to shift your focus back to those stairway lifts. Several questions must be answered as well before making a decision. Can the chair support the weight of your senior? Do you go for popular brand names like the Acorn stair lifts or do you prefer less popular ones? What other features of these chair lifts should you think about?

Are you leaning towards buying Acorn stair lifts? Their chair lifts have wireless remote controls.

Living at home with a disability is no longer a burden it use to be. With the advent of the Home Lift it is now far easier for a disabled or elderly person to stay in the home they know and love. Simple access to all rooms that were not accessible

Disabled home lifts are not just for the disabled or infirm! Many elderly people are now taking advantage of this modern technology and installing home wheelchair lifts as an alternative to moving home. If you thought it was hard leaving home at 17 try doing it at the age of 72

Think how much money and inconvenience you could safe by investing in a home lift. The thought of moving out of your family home with so many memories is daunting to say the least. With so many access solutions at hand it is now a reality to stay in the home you love

There are now many forms of disabled stairlifts available. Depending on your disability a standard straight or curved stairlift could solve your access solution problems. If the disabled person has a severe disability then a standard home stairlift will not be the ideal solution. Do plenty of research ther are many different models to choose from.

A more logical approach would be a wheelchair stairlift or commonly known as a "Through Floor Lift" Based on the common passenger lifts found in multi-story tower blocks or offices but on a much smaller compact scale. This type of lift is small compact and quiet in operation

These compact through floor wheelchair lifts offer a greater flex ability and a secure enclosure for the disabled person to be seated and safely transported between floors. If the person must remain in their wheelchair then a through floor lift is the only correct option to choose.

How Long Should A Stairlift Last

Oh' Boy tough question! it would be hard to put an actual figure on this as there are to many variables! Lift manufacturer, Amount of usage per day, Regular serviced, Location Internal-External etc.

The older stairlifts produced in the 80s are some of the best designs ever made! They were built like Army Tanks. Made of steel and well over engineered. There are still many in operation today and you would be looking at 20+ Years service.

I can't see modern stair lifts built in the 21st century being around in the next 20 years. I would have to say the life span for a modern stairlift of today would be 10 years and if one is looking at reselling a modern stair lift (2nd hand sale) the resale age would be a maximum of five years.

The modern stairlift is plastic junk! The carriages are made of moulded plastic the seats are preformed moulded chairs. Nothing is robust about these units. Ok they all look modern and are compact slimline design etc. Sorry I'm old school give me a tin box with a motor and a few simple relays and contactors I'm happy.

Stairlift electronics has gone crazy! There are stair lifts being produced today that contain up to 5 different (pcb's) Printed Circuit Boards. Use of electronics in modern stairlift systems is widespread and ideas are being developed ongoing in the same way as they are for other forms of transport like motor cars C'mon it's a damn stair lift under engineered over complicated and really no need for it.

Great I feel better now I've have had a little vent. Lets get back on topic! Life expectancy of a modern stairlift 10 years if you're lucky. Stair lift companies make money producing and selling new stair lifts. They tend to bring out new models every year. Within just 3 years your stairlift could be obsolete and parts no longer available (They Got-ya by the Balls)

Safer Stairs For The Elderly:

Over 65 year olds are the age group that is most affected by falls, with one third of the elderly fall at least once a year and 5 to 6% of these falls resulting in fractures. A vast majority of these fractures occur whilst losing balance going down the stairs. The main factors that put the elderly at risk of falling down the stairs are impaired vision, reduced strength and poor balance.

However, contrary to popular belief, falling is not a standard part of aging and it can be prevented. Most falls are due to medical conditions such as osteoporosis, lack of physical activity, impaired vision and environmental hazards.

Osteoporosis is a medical condition wherein bones become porous, less resistant to stress and more prone to fractures. The main causes of Osteoporosis are hormonal changes as well as calcium and a lack of vitamin D. It is the main cause of fractures in older adults. Osteoporosis can be prevented by eating calcium rich food (postmenopausal women need 1,500 mg of calcium/day), get sufficient intake of vitamin D to enhance the absorption of calcium in the bloodstream, and regularly carry out weight-bearing exercises.

Lack of physical exercise can lead to poor muscle tone, decreased muscle strength and loss of bone mass and flexibility. All these factors contribute to increasing the risk of a fall along with the seriousness of the injury that will result from the fall. It is therefore recommended to undertake regular physical exercise (at least 15 minutes a day) and wear proper fitting supportive soles.

Impaired vision such as glaucoma and cataracts alter older people's vision and increase their susceptibility to glare. These limitations hinder their ability to evolve in a safe environment and may lead to falls down the stairs. It is advised to have regular eye-checks and use contrasting colors to define balancing objects.

At least one third of falls in the elderly involve environmental hazards in the home. The most common hazard is tripping over an object that was lying on the floor. Other factors include the lack of grab bars along staircases and loose rugs. The risk of falling because of an environmental hazard in the home can be reduced by installing handrails on stairs and steps and keeping staircases clutter free. In this case having a residential stair lift fitted will also contribute to reducing the risk of falling down the stairs, as it will effortless bring you up and down the stairs.

Stairlifts – Allowing Elderly Relatives To Retain Their Independance

Many families worry about elderly relatives and often feel a sense of guilt that they cannot do more for them. On the other hand, many elderly relatives feel a burden on their children and grandchildren and wish to maintain their independence for as long as possible. A stair lift can be the ideal solution to both dilemmas; providing the support needed for parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to remain in their own home and move around it with ease. Different types include:

Unlike other modifications and home improvements, a stair lift can be installed (and uninstalled) without causing damage to original features and fixtures. Lifts are secured to the stair case, not the skirting board and are installed within a few hours. In addition, a stair lift is an alternative to carpeting or stripped waxed or polished floors or lipped stair cases.

The lifts are powered with electricity and for added safety they can run on both mains and battery power. The primary source of power is mains, however a battery will keep the lift working through power cuts, preventing sudden, unexpected breaking or isolation in one part of the house.

Each home is different and often a staircase can be the focal point of the entrance hall. The range of models available suit almost every type and style of staircase, whether straight or curved. Not only does this increase safety, it also removes the need to construct unsightly extra steps or raised platforms in compensation.

However, above all, installing a stair lift for an elderly relative provides peace of mind. No longer will you worry about a trip on the stairs or their concerns that they can't manage to climb the stairs every day. Installing a lift will put an end to their aching joints and help them continue their usual routine.

For elderly relatives in the family, stairlifts can make their lives easier and let them keep their independance

Mobility Pride Is Reinstated As A Result Of New Mobility Equipment

The fact that you may be mobility challenged does not meet that you cannot be proud and be allowed a little to get around free of constant care. In fact being mobility challenged no longer means that you are totally dependent on others. Modern devices make it possible for those with limitations to have mobility pride.

People in general are proud and for the most part prefer to do things on their own. The majority of us would rather do things ourselves than to have to depend on someone else to do them for us. In the past assistance would be required by someone of mobility challenged in doing the simplest tasks. Modern technology has been implemented into mobility equipment the ability to allow those that are mobility challenged to be self-sufficient.

One reason to doubt ourselves is the fact that we are unable to do things without the constant intervention of other people. Regardless of our physical condition we now have the ability to look at ourselves and know that we are not an imposition to others. Just because someone has been in an accident or affected physically by ailments does not mean they're not proud.

Devices such as a mobility chair reinstate confidence and pride into an individual that feels that they have been reduced physically as a result of their limitation. In fact mobility equipment is being created to reinstate pride and remove limitations that had previously existed for people that are mobility challenged. Mobility chairs are a major advancement in over the old style wheelchairs that were bulky and inoperable.

Mobility pride can also be affected by the ability to travel from one destination to another unassisted. While the mobility chair makes it possible to run your home and complete daily chores other mobility equipment makes it possible to leave the confines of your home on your own accord. The ability to get into a motor vehicle and transport yourself to any destination that you desire is a great way to reinstate pride in an individual who has been affected by mobility disabilities.

Modified vans that include mobility driver capabilities make it possible for someone who is confined to a chair to enter the van get behind the wheel and maneuver the vehicle independently. This freedom reinstates mobility pride in individuals that would have otherwise been required to be dependent upon other people.

Thanks to these devices and numerous others individuals that are afflicted with conditions that diminish their mobility now have full access to the independent world that does not shut off them. This creates a great amount of mobility pride in an individual who otherwise might not have the freedom to be proud.

As the aging population continues to rise, there are more and more people that live in their homes aged 80 and up . A lot of these elderly people need some modifications made to their homes to continue to live independently . This could also apply to those people who are not elderly but have gotten ill or injured in an accident that has caused physical problems . There are several home modifications that may be made to existing home to allow these people to continue living in their homes and to be independent and happy . Some examples of those modifications are walk in baths or a walk in bath where they may even wheel themselves into a shower to bathe, a chair lift that fits on to the stair railing to helps the disabled person up and down the stairs, putting ramps over stairs to allow the use of wheelchairs and making doorways.

A greater percentage of homes are two story ones versus a one story or a ranch style home in most parts of the country . This makes it more difficult for those that have trouble getting up and down the stairs like they used to be capable of doing . Many older people do not want to deal with the expense and the stress of moving from their home and many have their properties completely paid for also and are afraid they can not financially afford to move. This is where some renovations and modifications can be done to assist the homeowner to get up and down the stairs more easily . A terrific product is a seated lift that is attached to a stairway and the homeowner can sit in the seat and glides smoothly upstairs without having to struggle up the steps .

If the homeowner is confined to a wheelchair, making accommodations might require a bit more renovating of the existing home than if the person is simply slowing down or getting older . Many stairs that are less than 5 steps can be covered with a ramp to accommodate the wheelchair. Some of the doors may need to be replaced to accommodate the wider chair too as well as all flooring must be changed to a hard surface like tile or wood to make moving around easier . If it is a 2 level home, perhaps the mobility challenged persons bedroom and laundry facilities can be changed to be on the main floor so the person with the disability can stay on the main level .

To assist the person be more independent modifications in the kitchen and bathroom are essential also with lower countertops in both and a walk in shower or bath that may assist the person to clean themselves independently. Being able to prepare your own meals and clean oneself when you have physical limitations help significantly .

Hopefully with a great deal of assistance from friends and family, these people may continue to stay where their home is and with some of these modifications live a happy successful life. Just because you have physical limitations does not mean you can not live independently .

Connor R. Sullivan searched the keywords walk in bath in order to purchase a safe tub for his aging parents. He installed walk in baths for his aging parents.
