Stair Lift Service Repair Contracts

You just received a friendly phone call from your stairlift company explaining your guarantee warranty is about to expire and why you need to take out the optional maintenance service protection plan. If you are not covered by a Maintenance / Repair Cover Plan repair bills can be both inconvenient and costly.

Replacing broken or worn parts on your stairlift can often exceed the cost of a Service Maintenance Contract and no guarantee a company will offer to send a call-out engineer to someone who is not on their books so to speak.

Annual stairlift maintenance contracts start at around (300-600) The lower price insurance packages will only give you very limited cover and without doubt you will need to pay for the extras! Call-out, Parts and Labour costs.

You really need to read this bit! Some companies charge you for traveling time. If you do not have a contract with the company you engage the services of. Make sure you ask if they charge for the engineers traveling time.

If there not a local company and the engineer spends two hours travelling time to reach you? That's a hefty bill! Average call-out price (80 per hour x 2 =160) and he hasn't even arrived yet. That's only half of it good possibility you will get stung for the two hour return trip as well 80 x 4 =320 smackers.

Stairlift companies offer a range of maintenance service contracts rated by stars or colours. Obviously the more stars or metallic of colour the higher the price but more benefits and cover you receive. All contracts should include an annual service of your stair lift.

I personally would recommend that you take some type of protection cover out on your stairlift unless you have very deep pockets. In fact it would be wise to use the company you originally purchased the product from. Other companies might not have the service parts required to complete the service or repair.

In my next article I will explain what you actually get for your money when an engineer arrives to carry out an annual service of your stairlift. Keep your eyes peeled out for that one some good info to be had.

What Is A Bespoke Curved Stairlift And How Come They Are So Expensive

Curved stairlifts are bespoke design! Each curved rail is custom made for your staircase. So if you are in the market for a curved stairlift then our quick guide on Bespoke stairlifts is a great way to find out more information and what they actually are etc.

Bespoke means the stairlift is custom made for your staircase. Well not actually the stairlift but the stairlift rail. Every curved stairlift needs a custom made rail individually made for each staircase

How much do curved stairlifts cost? Well that depends on the complexity of your staircase. The more bends you have in your staircase will require more custom bespoke rails to be formed. Along with other factors such as powered hinge rails the cost can increase dramatically

Curved stairlifts are DC! Battery powered, the batteries are normally located inside the stairlift carriage/chair. The batteries are charged via top and bottom charging strips located on the curved rail. When the stairlift is parked at the top or bottom the stairlift batteries are automatically recharged

All modern curved stairlifts now use a "Rack & Pinion drive system! Hardened steel rack/teeth are welded to the tubular curved rail. The stairlift gearbox is coupled to a hardened steel pinion "cog" The pinion sits in mesh with the steel rack and when the motor is driven the teeth of the pinion drive the unit up or down

Curved stairlifts should only be produced and installed by curved rail specialists. Do not waste your time and money trying to buy a second hand stairlift with the intention of installing it yourself. If you want to reduce the costs of buying a stairlift then you should try and find a reputable supplier that deals in reconditioned units

A top of the range curved stairlift with all the bells & whistles could set you back 6000 You can reduce the costs buy finding a local supplier of reconditioned stairlifts. We recommend you shop around and get as many prices / quotes as you can. compare prices of new and used curved stairlifts. Due to the large expense of the item you need to get it right first time. Try and make it a family decision. and don't sign on the day no matter how good the deal sounds

Allow yourself at least 48 hours to think and share your thoughts with others! It's amazing how different you might feel about a product or bargain given the opportunity to think it over.

Saving Money DIY Stairlift Installation

Buying used recycled stair lifts is a big commitment and one that should not be rushed. Market research is the key! Get it wrong You will surly be out of pocket for a good few hundred quid (If your lucky)

Home Installation of Chairlifts

The other day I was talking to a friend who had bought a recycled stair lift from a well known auction website. He paid 600.00 and tried to install it with the help of his Father. They installed the stair lift carriage incorrectly and smashed cracked the stair lift body casting. The repair bill would have cost more than the stair lift they had just purchased

Professional stairlift Installation

They eventually engaged a local stair lift company to supply and install a reconditioned stair lift costing the brothers 900.00, it actually cost them 1500 in total so as you can see they saved a small fortune?

Battery DC Stairlifts Stairlifts are becoming a lot simpler to install due to all stairlift manufacturers producing battery D.C. stairlifts. No complicated mains wiring! Most battery stairlifts can be plugged into a standard mains outlet-socket

If you intend to purchase a secondhand chairlift then it would be wise to buy a battery DC chairlift. With that said! We do not recommend DIY chairlift installations! We are dealing with moving machinery and if not installed correctly and checked by a trained engineer then sadly someone could get seriously hurt. There have been a number of cases within the last 2 years and one poor child lost his life through incorrect installation of a chairlift

Installing Curved Stair lifts

If your staircase requires a curved stairlift then trying to buy a second hand curved stairlift for DIY installation isa no brainer! Curved stairlifts are bespoke design! Each curve rail is custom built for your individual staircase

Saving Money buying second hand Stairlifts

We all like to save money and buying second hand used unwanted chairlifts with the intention of home DIY installation might seem like a good option to reduce the price of buying a new or refurbished stairlift. The truth is! It will not cost much more to contract the work out to a local reputable company and the added bonus of your chairlift being installed by a professional along with a 12 month warranty out weigh all the other cost saving factors

I'm not against anyone trying to save money! Just remember the old adage' Forewarned is forearmed' this is the consumers' best weapon! We all have the responsibility to educate ourselves whether about purchasing second hand stairlifts, Computers, Best buys at local supermarkets or engaging the services of local tradesmen

Stairlift Rentals Are Cheap Easy Way To Regain Your Freedom And Independence

Stairlift rentals are now a cheap way to regain your independence. Stair lift technology has grown tremendously over the last few years. Battery stairlifts can be installed in almost any home in less than 1 hour

Until five years ago, if you required a rental stairlift the cost was very expensive and you were tied into a minimum 6 month rental contract along with a 1000 deposit installment charge. In fact it was very hard to find a stairlift company that offered stairlift rentals

How things have changed. 21st century technology along with battery powered (dc) driven stairlifts Means almost every stairlift company supplier is now offering cheap stairlift rental packages. No minimum rental contract. You can now rent a stairlift for one single day

Reputable stairlift companies can have you up and running in less than 48 hours. most suppliers installers will not even need to attend your home to carry out a home survey. You explain your staircase layout and dimensions they give you a quote over the phone

The costs of renting a stairlift can vary from company to company. As a ballpark figure normal prices would start at 300 None refundable installation charge then a weekly rental payment between 10-15.00 gets you up and running

The main advantage of renting stairlifts! Minimum layout costs we are talking a few hundred Quid instead of thousands. No hefty repair bills. Great short term solution to access problems caused through an accident or injury. You may need a short term rental stairlift to allow visiting friends or relatives access to all of your home etc.

A common question will the installation damage my staircase? Stairlifts are secured to the stair treads not the wall. In fact if your staircase has a good quality shagpile carpet a quick scrub with a stiff brush should remove all traces of a stairlift ever being installed

A Refurbished Stairlift Could Be Cheaper

September 22nd, 2011 Guest Author Posted in Residential Stair Lifts No Comments »

Find Out More About a stair chair lift for your home.
And check out our stairlift review

For those who struggle with mobility issues, something particularly common amongst the elderly, a stairlift can be a worthwhile home improvement. It's a huge cause of concern for family members to have an elderly relative who struggles to get around living in a house with stairs. However, it's equally as distressing for the elderly family member to have to sell up their house to move either onto a single story property or even into a care home.

The best solution is a stairlift or perhaps a refurbished stairlift. The person requiring this device can then stay in their home and continue being independent. It also means they don't have to go through the financial and emotional stress of moving homes, especially if it is against their will. The relatives are also reassured that their is unlikely to be an accident relating to the stairs.

However, stairlifts can be pricey, particularly for those who are living on a pension or retirement income of some sort. If you don't have huge amounts of disposable income to hand, you have probably considered purchasing a refurbished stairlift. There's something of a misconception that 'refurbished' equates to lower quality - something that is definitely untrue provided you buy from a reputable retailer.

While refurbished stairlifts obviously aren't brand new and have therefore already been in use, reputable retailers will provide a complete warranty with any purchase - including a refurbished one. Given the fact that curved stairlifts in particular can costs in excess of 5000, the potential savings could make a big difference.

If you decide to go for refurbished, you should shop around many different places so that you can get a good idea of who has the best deals. You should make sure you dont just take the first price, as you may find it cheaper elsewhere. Get quotes from a few people to ensure you are getting the best possible value for money.

9 Benefits You Get From Vertical Wheelchair Lifts

May 13th, 2011 Guest Author Posted in Residential Stair Lifts No Comments »

And check out our stairlift review

One of the most helpful equipment for mobility these days is the vertical wheelchair lift. These lifts allow individuals with problems in vertical mobility to move more independently. As an alternative to elevators, vertical wheelchair lifts are more practical. Here are some reasons why a vertical wheelchair lift is a better option.

Vertical Lifts Are More Affordable

- The traditional access paths would require large amount of time and money to build whereas wheelchair lifts can be installed easily. The installation process is simple and efficient and it only requires a little time to install the lift.4677832955 b74911a6bb m 9 Benefits You Get From Vertical Wheelchair Lifts

Nowadays, some buildings consider this as the best option in enhancing accessibility instead of setting up elevator and ramps, thus it is considered as a mini elevator the only difference is that it is less costly and does not require extensive maintenance compared to its counterpart.

Vertical Stair Lifts Are Easy to Operate

- Vertical lifts are easier to operate. Compared to traditional access paths, a vertical wheelchair lift is easier and less stressful to operate, thus its manuals provides guidelines and instruction that are very clear and easy to understand.

Safety Features

- Wheelchair lifts are also safer to use compared to ordinary platforms such as ramps. These lifts come with various safety features that provide its user with full security. Some of its security features would include its ability to function when power fails. Ability to function manually in case the machine breaks down. It has a built in sensor that detects movements and even an emergency stop switch.

More Movement and Mobility

- The two top-most advantages of getting wheelchair lift is mobility and independence. It does not limit your lifestyle anymore; it provides you fast and easy mobility. It can be installed in your home, commercially and can even be portable. It does not need so many requirements for it to be installed. Unlike the traditional access paths that you require large space and funds to install it.

Portability

- Being portable is an advantage thus it can be brought and used anywhere. Storage is also easy thus the wheelchair lifts can be compressed to fit through doorways.

Electric or Hydraulic Options

- Another advantage is that it can be portable which means it is compact, lightweight and can be used anywhere and thus enhances your mobility unlike the other access path which is limited only to a place where it is attached.

Repair and Maintenance

- It can be powered by electricity or by a hydraulic mechanism or has a back up battery system. For wheelchair lifts powered by a hydraulic mechanism you can still use in case of a power failure, where as its counterpart like the elevators cannot work without electricity.

Designed With Users in Mind

- If a problem occurs with your wheelchair lifts, repairs are something you should not worry about because most manufacturers also do the repairs of the wheelchair lifts and sometimes repair it at no cost.

- Because they are generally designed with specific needs in mind, these devices are easy to use. With a vertical wheelchair lift you would require less help or can even do things on your own because the controls can be easily manipulated by the user. They can easily get up and down the stairs without the need of any assistance.

Whats The Difference Between A Secondhand Stairlift And A Reconditioned Stairlift

January 6th, 2011 Guest Author Posted in Residential Stair Lifts No Comments »

Find Out More About a stair chair lift for your home.
And check out our stairlift review

Whats the difference between a secondhand chairlift or a reconditioned chairlift! A second hand unit is exactly what you get. Sold as seen so to speak. It's very unlikely you will get a guarantee or warranty etc.

When purchasing a reconditioned unit then the company you purchased it from should have done a complete overhaul of the stair lift. The stair lift should have been stripped down and serviceable parts renewed.

Chairlift rollers bearings should be replaced. If the chairlift is AC electrical driven the T-Flex (Trailing Cable) should be replaced even if there are no signs of damage. If the chairlift is DC battery driven then a new set of batteries should be installed.

All moving parts should be lubricated to the manufacturers specification. The motor-gearbox should be checked and gearbox oil renewed. All electrical safety switches should be checked and renewed if there are signs of flash arcing on the contacts.

The Overspeed Governor (OSG) should be checked for correct operation and re-calibrated if required. On completion of the overhaul the chairlift will be rebuilt and the carriage is given a thourer cleaning or even re-sprayed to make it look like brand new.

It's unlikely you will be able to buy a reconditioned stair lift of the shelf so to speak! Most companies will only offer supply and install package. Reconditioned stair lifts should come with some type of guarantee warranty this could be between six and twelve months. If you are looking at buying a reconditioned stair lift ensure the unit is less than five years of age.

Older units could present a problem! Sourcing spare parts etc. Ensure you ask the supplier that they supply you with a stairlift less than five years of age. If they cannot guarantee this then find another company who can. Do some market research and find a model you like the look of or a brand name someone has recommended and ask the company if they can supply that model reconditioned

Do not just accept anything they throw at you! There is a huge choice of models and companies to choose from so be fussy, at the end of the day you are a paying customer and should receive the same quality service and respect if you were buying a new product

How To Clean Chairlifts

September 9th, 2010 Guest Author Posted in Residential Stair Lifts 1 Comment »

Find Out More About a stair chair lift for your home.
And check out our stairlift review

Astair chair liftcan be dust magnets so how do we clean a stairlift! Follow our quick guide best methods and products to use when cleaning a stair lift. Cleaning your stair lift should be a simple straight forward job. A quick dust down twice a week with a cloth duster or feather duster should be more than adequate.

Avoid using water or cleaning solvents at all costs. For straight stairlifts with aluminium tracks/rails can be wiped over with a damp cloth (Damp Not Wet) Then buff dry with a clean cloth.

The seat chair/carriage can be cleaned using house polish! Always spray the polish onto the cleaning cloth then rub and buff to a shine. (Never spray the polish directly onto the chair/carriage)

Spraying house polish directly onto the carriage may well cause damage to components and circuit boards. If too much polish is applied it can find its way (Drip) through air vents and gaps etc. Causing S/C Short Circuits or corrode delicate components on the PCB printed circuit board.

Curved stairlift rails/tracks should never be cleaned with any type of solvents. Avoid house polish and DWD (Engineering oils) like the plague. Curved stairlifts use a system where the speed of the stairlift is monitored using an RMU! A roller sits on the rail and as your stairlift moves this roller rolls along the rail sending pulse information to the operating system.

Applying cleaning solvents to the curved rail could cause the roller to lose friction and skid, this action causes the stair lift to receive incorrect pulses and the stair lift will stop/shutdown. Typical symptoms intermittent stop starting! The stairlift will travel a few inches then stop. This symptom could also be caused through flat batteries.

Removing marks from a curved rail! A good rub with a damp cloth should remove most marks. For stubborn marks a light rub with wire wool or light gauge emery paper is all that is required. The rail should appear matt in colour not a shiny gloss colour.

The cleaning of your stairlift should be undertaken by a qualified engineer who should clean and lubricate the stair lift following the manufacturer's specification and guidelines on its annual service inspection.
