Electric wheelchairs are wheelchairs that are motorized. Electric wheelchairs may be a necessity for people who do not have the upper arm strength or ability to use a manual wheelchair. Some people who are able to use in manual wheelchair may want to use an electric wheelchair, but may not be able to because of the increased cost of an electric wheelchair.
Since electric will chairs are powered by a battery, they require less physical strength to maneuver than manual wheelchairs. The difference in the ease of use of an electric wheelchair versus a manual wheelchair is especially evident when attempting to go uphill or on slanted surfaces.

If the physician feels that the person requires the use of an electric wheelchair, much of the cost could be covered by the person's medical insurance. Mobility scooters are different than electric wheelchairs. The steering is accomplished by use of a handlebar in front of the scooter in the typical design of a mobility scooter. Electric wheelchairs have steering controls on the right armrest.

The maneuverability of mobility scooters is less than that of electric wheelchairs. The ease of negotiating corners and turns with an electric wheelchair depends on the model of the electric wheelchair.
There are three basic models of electric wheelchairs. The traditional model of electric wheelchair is the rear-wheel drive electric wheelchair. Of the basic models, the rear wheel drive has the least amount of maneuverability. The mid-wheel drive electric wheelchair as the highest level of maneuverability, but also has some instability during stopping and starting.
The front-wheel drive electric wheelchair is another option. They do not have the level of maneuverability that a mid-wheel drive electric wheelchair has, but they offer better maneuverability than the rear-wheel drive wheelchairs.
Freedom is a big selling point for electric wheelchairs. People who use electric wheelchairs may not need the assistance from others that they might need with a manual wheelchair. Using an electric wheelchair also allows easier use of their hands while operating the wheelchair.
Many different types of wheelchair accessories are often available for use with electric wheelchairs. Wheelchair accessories like cupholders may be nice to have, but some wheelchair accessories such as safety belts and oxygen tank holders are necessities for some wheelchair users.
